Herd of Hope

Design of a website including an interactive map for the Herd of Hope, displayed across London’s Spitalfields Market from 2020-2022, and created by internationally acclaimed artists Gillie and Marc. Sheldrick Wildlife Trust‘s commitment lasts a lifetime, as they undertake interconnected projects including anti-poaching operations, veterinary interventions, and initiatives to secure habitats and elephant rangelands, focused on saving one of the planet’s most iconic species—the elephant.

The Herd of Hope powerful public art installation features 21 life-sized bronze elephants—a matriarch leading 20 smaller elephants—symbolizing a poignant migration from the plains of Kenya to the heart of London.

Each sculpture represents a real orphaned elephant rescued by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, with its name proudly displayed. Visitors are invited to connect with each elephant’s story through scannable QR codes that link to their rescue videos and provide an opportunity to support their ongoing rehabilitation. This moving installation offers a rare chance to engage with wildlife conservation in a deeply personal and meaningful way.

Web & Interactive Map Design

The interactive map experience accompanied the Herd of Hope sculpture installation, allowing users to explore the locations of each life-sized elephant across the city. The map offered an intuitive, mobile-friendly interface where each sculpture was pinned to its exact placement.

When a visitor scanned the QR code on a sculpture, the map dynamically revealed detailed information about the real-life orphan it represents—including their name, rescue story, photos, and a video documenting their journey. This digital experience enhanced public engagement by blending physical art with accessible storytelling, encouraging deeper emotional connection and support for wildlife conservation.

The interactive map section of the website was live from 2020-2022.
